Transformers vs. Lady Liberty

An edition of a Transformers comic book. We see once more Lady liberty as the icon of destruction. “Humanity at it’s lowest point”, as it is called.

Breaking Bad

Breaking Bad is at the moment my favorite television series. It’s about Walter White a high school chemistry teacher who is diagnosed with advanced lung cancer. To secure his family's financial future he started producing and selling methamphetamine with his former student Jesse Pinkman.

Despite the series black humor it’s at a first look not much about ruins. But at a second it’s much about decay, about the ruin of the American middle-class, struggling in vain to maintain the status, without a secure future and without a good health-insurance.

This pivotal topic is reflected by the impressive beauty of the images of abandoned parking lots, decaying buildings and behind all a vast western style landscape. Above all because of the images Breaking Bad is also a profoundly romantic series, confronting human decay with the beauty of nature.

And last not least there is Saul Goodman Walt and Jesse's criminal lawyer. Above his shabby office there is flapping a trashy Lady Liberty, in this form a well known symbol of American decay.

Beautiful Decay

Two beautiful post-apocalyptic paintings by the Swedish artist Andrée Wallin. It’s easy to be seen where the allure of such sceneries can be found.

Big Tits Zombie

Big Tits Dragon (2010) is a Japanese fantasy-horror film. Because of the zombies it’s also a kind of post-apocalyptic movie.
I love the strange colours and sceneries of these trash movies. The world is already gone and we’re living in a weird panopticon. And despite all the big titties the film is profoundly sad.

London Futures

A new exhibition shows London landmarks in an environment transformed by climate change. From rice fields in Parliament Square to ice-skating on the Thames, 14 familiar views of the capital have been digitally transformed by illustrators Robert Graves and Didier Madoc-Jones. The exhibition runs from October until March 2011 at the Museum of London.

Robert’s Ruins

Hubert Robert (1733–1808) was a French painter who marks the transition from Neoclassicism to Romanticism. Like many artists of his time he traveled to Italy to visit and study there architecture, museums and landscape. Soon ruins became his favorite subject, which earned him the nickname "Robert of the Ruines".

But even though he chose classical ruins as subjects he painted them in a romantic manner. It’s a sweet decay reminding of greater times which have long passed by.

Disaster Architecture

The Cahill Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics in Pasadena, California was designed by the Californian firm of architects Morphosis and finished in 2009.

The terra cotta facade is fragmented and reminds of buildings after earthquakes. To me it looks like the quotation of disasters like that in Chile 2010 – in this case more a kind of anticipation.
