Dark Tower

The Girl Who Owned A City
"The Girl Who Owned a City" is a post apocalyptic novel for children by O. T. Nelson, first published in 1975.
A virus has killed all people over an the age of twelve. The surviving children are forming gangs and small armies to fight for the remaining resources. And there is Lisa organizing her neighborhood in a better way…
Yeah, it’s a nice book and I loved it once, but the real interesting thing is, that nobody (neither the authot nor the children) seems to miss the adults, the dead parents. Sure, there are a lot of problems because they are gone. But this makes the world only more interesting. Finally children are on their own!

Post-Apocalyptic Survival Tips
Sometimes I think that I will probably never understand US-Americans.
To me it seems normal to visit industrial ruins and breathe and feel there the nostalgic atmosphere of decay. I also understand that many people like Mad-Max-style post-apocalyptic movies or are passing their time with shooting zombies in video games.
But then I came across that book "When All Hell Breaks Loose: Stuff You Need to Survive When Disaster Strikes" by Cody Lundin. At the first look it seemed to be some post-apocalyptic zombie novel (I'm always looking for books like these). But then I discovered that it is real, not a bad joke, someone is really giving tips how to prepare for the apocalypse. And not enough, there are further a lot of people who are buying that stuff, who wanted to be prepared for 2012. Sometimes good fiction seems to be overtaken by reality.

Cormac McCarthy: The Road
Since I read Blood Meridian a few years ago Cormac McCarthy belongs to my absolute favorite authors. So it isn’s surprising that I was deeply impressed by his dark post-apocalyptic novel The Road. A man and his son are on their journey across a desolated landscape some years after an unspecified catastrophe, probably a nuclear war. They are suffering coldness and hunger and above all they have to fear the cannibalistic bands of other survivors.
Maybe that The Road is no book about ruins but it derives from the same post-apocalyptic spirit which is nourishing the contemporary inclination to ruins and decay. Some critics call Cormac McCarthy even a “gothic” writer and The Road a “gothic novel”.
In Blood Meridian McCarthy described the barbarization of civilized people, and the book is much more violent than The Road. But the violence is part of the wild colorful life at the frontier. In The Road the violence is always present but more like a threat, like the darkness in the background. And therefore I fear that the film, which will be released in October this year, will convert the whole thing in a typical action movie. But I don’t think that this is the intention of the book. That is much more about the slowly and unspectacular dying humanity, about the apocalypse we deserve.
