Colossal Ruins

Two more of the famous prints by the Scottish painter and traveler David Roberts (1796–1864). Both are showing Karnak probably Robert's favorite subject. It's above all the colossal size of the ruins reducing men to ants. It's easy to see that he still has an enormous influence on fantasy painters.

Surrealist Disasters

Two works by the Russian-Canadian artist George Grie (born 1962). Grie specializes in 3D, 2D, and matte painting images. He is strongly influenced by famous surrealists such as René Magritte and Salvador Dalí.

Post apocalyptic Dioramas

 

Lori Nix is a New York based photographer who specializes in constructing dioramas and photographing these. One of her projects is "The City" showing a post apocalyptic dioramas of Art museums, Broadway theaters, laundromats and bars etc.

She tells also that she's very interested in depicting danger and disaster, and greatly influenced by landscape painting, particularly the Hudson River School and the Romantic painter Casper David Friedrich.

Why doesn't this surprise me.

Jungle Book meets David Roberts

The Night Watch by the english painter Briton Rivière (1840-1920). Rivière was specialized in animal paintings, so it looks like the Jungle Book meets David Roberts.

The Ruin which never was

"Cloister Cemetery in the Snow" (1817-19) by Caspar David Friedrich is probably one of the most famous ruin paintings, romantic ruin at its purest.

But what not so much people know is that the ruin never existed. Its pattern was a drawing called "The Jacobi Church in Greifswald as a Ruin" done in 1815. The joke is that the Jacobi Church is still standing in Greifswald and never has been a ruin.

When Caspar David Friedrich drew it as a ruin he did more or less the same as some geeks of today when they are changing some photos with photoshop into post-apocalyptic views.

I love these post apocalyptic chicks by Brian Viveros, kind of profoundly sad but always with Marlboros dangling from their lips. Probably some lone survivors from the last Zombie war or something like that.

Airy Contrasts

Some time ago I discovered in an abandoned factory in Barcelona some artwork of the Brazilian artist Rodrigo Villas. Some colourful graffitis on the walls and above all the little birds, for which he’s probably best known.


These little bird sculptures provide a light, floating contrast to all the rotting concrete.

Max Ernst's Dark Visions

Two variations called "The Entire City" (1935 and 1936) by the German Surrealist painter Max Ernst (1891–1976). I have no doubt that this city is an abandoned ruin, large dark and menacing, a remnant of a ancient times.

Forgotten Worlds

Some more of the impressive artwork by Frederick Catherwood, who visited and painted the ruins of the Maya civilization in the 19th century. His paintings have the enchantment of a long forgotten world.
