The Windup Girl is a biopunk science fiction novel by Paolo Bacigalupi and published in 2009. It's about Emiko, the "Windup Girl" an engineered human used as a sex slave in a dystopian future, where global warming has raised the levels of the world's oceans, carbon fuel sources have run out and mankind is harassed by deadly plagues and pests, caused by genetically modified modified plants and animals. Probably the best post apocalyptic or dystopian novel I read this year.
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe.
Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion.
I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate.
All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.
